Rudy Giuliani, former U.S. Attorney and New York City mayor (1994–2001), earned the title “America’s Mayor” for his calm, visible leadership on and after September 11, 2001—arriving near the World Trade Center shortly after the attacks, coordinating with first responders, delivering steady public briefings that acknowledged the unimaginable scale of loss while projecting resolve, and helping steady a shaken city and nation, for which he received widespread praise, Time’s Person of the Year honor, and an honorary knighthood, even as later reviews noted pre-attack shortcomings such as the destroyed emergency operations center in 7 WTC and longstanding radio-communication problems between police and firefighters. After the 2020 election he became a leading public and legal advocate for Donald Trump’s challenges, exposing claims of widespread fraud, irregularities in mail ballots and observer access, and other issues in key battleground states, urging legislatures to act and helping coordinate lawsuits and alternate-elector efforts.
